Combining Plano’s vibrant business community with a nationally-recognized school district, the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program encompasses both a paid, summer high school internship program along with a progressive summer teacher externship program.

Since 2014, the inaugural year for the program, 450 Plano high school students have received internships at small and large companies, nonprofits and governmental agencies throughout the city. Providing life-changing, real work experiences, these internships have helped build the vision and the skills needed for students to successfully transition into college and into future careers. And for participating companies, the Mayor’s Summer Internship Program has proved to be a rewarding investment in the area’s future workforce — showing interns that their hometown is more than a starting point, it is a career destination.

In 2017, Plano ISD, in partnership with the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program, founded the Teacher Externship program. This progressive program provides unique professional learning opportunities for PK -12 Plano ISD teachers in collaboration with local partners in business and industry.  As externs, teachers have access to learning that reaches beyond traditional classroom or workshop settings and engage in experiences that will enrich the classroom-to-career connections for students.  Working side-by-side with professionals to form a partnership of shared expertise, teacher externs build meaningful community relationships and provide valuable insights for classroom and workplace application.

Considering the exceptional benefits of the Mayor’s Summer Internship Program, Mayor LaRosiliere believes that it is crucial for the internship program to reach as many students as possible and why he personally encourages your organization to get involved! To learn how to get involved in both the internship and externship programs, contact Vicki Wait, . You can also visit the How to Help page or visit the Plano ISD Teacher Externship page at
